Therapeutic Ultrasound

headsonicTo date, there seems to be little evidence to support the use of ultrasound therapy in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. The large majority of randomized placebo-controlled trials with adequate methods did not support the existence of clinically important or statistically significant differences in favour of ultrasound therapy.

Limited evidence suggests that the application of continuous ultrasound in patients with chronic pain, caused by degenerative changes in the musculoskeletal system, may lead to a clinically significant reduction in pain. Additionally, there is some evidence that therapeutic ultrasound has a small effect on improving low-back function in the short term, however, more evidence is required to draw any firm conclusions on efficacy.

Conclusion:
There is only poor quality evidence from very limited data to suggest that therapeutic ultrasound may be more effective than placebo for either short- or long-term symptom improvement in people with CTS. There is insufficient evidence to support the greater benefit of one type of therapeutic ultrasound regimen over another or to support the use of therapeutic ultrasound as a treatment with greater efficacy compared to other non-surgical interventions for CTS, such as splinting, exercises, and oral drugs.
